  IPS, 28 September 2006 - The statistics are mind-boggling: of the more than six billion people in the world today, over one billion have no access to improved drinking water -- a basic necessity for human life -- and about 2.6 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation.

• Bleak Future for Global Water Supplies.

Two new reports, one from the WWF and the other from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) forecast a bleak future for global water supplies.

Stockholm, 25 August 2006 - Fifty participants representing business, non-governmental organizations and academia came together for a WBCSD side event during World Water Week in Stockholm (20-26 August) to discover the WBCSD Water Scenarios to 2025 and then brainstorm about their relevance in group discussions.

Eskom power stations run constantly, supplying in excess of 95% of South Africa 's electrical energy and more than half of the electricity used on the African continent. Without water, this output would not be possible.
