Shivute Visits The Great Kuiseb

The NamWater CEO, Dr Vaino Shivute accompanied by members of his senior management team paid a three day visit to the Erongo Region to address urgent issues related to water supply.

The heavy floods down the Kuiseb River, which knocked down many of NamWater power poles, resulting in the water supply disruption to Walvis Bay, prompted the visit.

Shivute also paid a visit to Rossing Uranium offices in Swakopmund before travelling a distance of 100 km South-East of Swakopmund into the Namib Desert to visit the new Uranium Mine, Langer Heinrich. This mine will need a substantial supply of water from NamWater for its operations. The construction of a new pipeline to supply the mine has already started.

After visiting Kuiseb River, Shivute tasked the maintenance team, to find a lasting solution to the problem of Kuiseb River water supply. He also raised concerns about the maintenance of infrastructure in the area, which he found to be not well maintained.

Currently, NamWater has about 60 boreholes in the Kuiseb River, which extract and pump water to mile 7 reservoirs from where it is treated and pumped to Walvis Bay and the adjacent areas.
