Environmental Stewardship

Water is a precious natural resource, and its protection is of utmost importance. As we at NamWater work to provide water and water services to our customers, we do so in an environmentally responsible manner that enhances the environment and promotes sustainability. We comply with the regulations of the draft Environmental Management Act and in many cases exceed applicable environmental regulations. The striving to adhere to and exceed environmental regulations is the foundation on which we will build continuous improvement of our environmental performance.

Environmental Assessments (EA) are undertaken for all major projects. From the EA, environmental management plans ( EMP ) are compiled before the documentation is submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) in our application for Environmental Clearance (EC). An EC is only issued if the MET is satisfied that all potential impacts have been adequately investigated and appropriate mitigation recommended. The implementation of the mitigation measures is described in the EMP . Regular monitoring is done to determine if the construction teams comply with the EMP and corrective action is taken in cases of non-compliance. MET officials join the monitoring team during compliance monitoring.

For smaller projects Initial Environmental Evaluations (IEE) are undertaken. After the IEE, the same steps as described above are followed.

Take over inspections are done on completion of all construction projects. After the inspection, the MET is requested to issue a letter indicating that the rehabilitation done, meets their approval.

NamWater wants to exceed the environmental expectations of our stakeholders and establish the benchmarks by which others will be measured.
