Who is responsible for water leaks?

    • NamWater, the Municipalities and the Councils are responsible for water leaks which occur in the streets or public places. These entities repair and pay for all such leaks and burst of water infrastructure under their jurisdiction.  Individual property owners living near the leaks will not be expected to pay for the repair.
    • If the leak is on the property, or near the property boundary, then it may be the property owner’s problem.  Immediate steps should be taken to stop the loss of water by turning off the supply water valve near the boundary. You should contact a reputable plumber as soon as possible to affect the necessary repairs.

How can I determine if there is a hidden water leak at my house?

    • First you must determine where the leak is coming from, that is, inside your house or property or from the delivery point, which is the responsibility of the Municipality. To determine this you must do the following:
      • Ensure that nobody in the house is using any water and the toilet cisterns are full and the geyser is not filling up,
Look at your meter, if the meter is still running, you have a leak on your property, even if it is not visible. It will more than likely be an underground leak. Before getting the leak fixed, ask the municipality to check and see if the leakage is before your metering point. If it is within your boundary, you are responsible. Get the leak fixed as soon as possible.
