Karasburg Purification Plant

Raw water is abstracted from the Dreihuk Dam and pumped through an almost 19 km pipeline to the purification plant. It also is important to note that the abstraction of raw water from this dam is limited, depending on the situation and the recommendations by the GEOHIDROLOGY. For additional demand, raw water is abstracted from boreholes situated 1 km, northwest of the purification plant.

Mini purification takes place here and consists of the following steps: Flash mixing (pre chlorination), radial flow sedimentation, contact reservoir (intermediate chlorination),
filtration (Slow), storage (post chlorination) and distribution.

Note that no chemical dosing is taking place here, because of the turbidity of raw water

abstracted from the Dreihuk dam, which is within the prescribed limits of <1.0 Ntu (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). The actual Ntu is most of the time round and about 0.2 to 0.7
