Capacity of plant:
540 m3/h
Source of water :
Zambezi River
Year of construction:
na
Treatment steps :
Pressure sand filters and disinfection

Description of Plant :

Since the raw-water entering the Katima Mulilo water treatment plant is already fairly clean, this plant employs only two treatment steps – filtration and disinfection. Adding of flocculants and settling of suspended particles is thus not necessary on this plant.

The water from the Zambezi River is therefore pumped directly to the 5 pressure sand filters where any suspended matter is removed from the water.

The water is then disinfected by adding a chlorine gas/water mixture as it flows from the filters to the underground reservoir.

From the reservoir the water is pumped to supply Katima and its suburbs, Mafuta, the army base at Mpacha and Chinchimane-Linyanti pipeline. Chlorine disinfection again takes place before the water is pumped to the consumers.
