Dr Vaino Shivute is the Chief Executive Officer of NamWater. Born at Oshigambo, in the Oshikoto Region, he commenced primary school in the village but then moved to Swakopmund in 1963 to live with his uncle. Here he continued his primary education at the Swakopmund Community Primary School in Mondesa. After completing his St. 6 (Grade 8), he was admitted to the Augustineum Secondary School in 1969 where he completed his Matric (Gr. 12) in 1973. In 1974 he went into exile like so many other young people at the time. He joined the People's Liberation Army (SWAPO's Military wing) from 1974 until 1978 and received his military training at Kongwa in Tanzania .
Shivute was admitted to the United Nations Institute for Namibia (UNIN) in 1979 where he obtained a Diploma in Public Administration and Management, specialising in Agriculture, in 1981. He continued with studies in Management of Public Enterprises in Ljubljana , in the then Yugoslavia , and proceeded to the University of East Anglia in the U.K where he obtained a first degree in Development Studies. He advanced to MSc in Agricultural Research and Development and capped his educational achievements with a PhD in Agronomy. He was appointed NamWater CEO on 1 January 2004.
